MEYERSDALE — The phrase “like mother, like daughter” rang true Wednesday at the Somerset County Fair’s dairy cow show.

Austin Ream won supreme champion of the junior show and reserve supreme champion of the open show with the daughter of his 2008 Red and White champion cow.

While typically cows from the Holstein family win big, it was a 9-year-old Brown Swiss owned by Troy Hostetter that won supreme champion in the open show.

Hostetter, of Hostetter Dairy Farm in Rockwood, has been showing cows for 20 years, but never won supreme champion.

“We thought it was between us,” he said. “I thought (the judge) would go with the Red and White, but I was hoping he would pick her.”

He said his cow, Jackie, won because she was in good condition for her age.

Ream, 15, of Markleton also won reserve champion in the junior show with his Holstein. He said he was hoping his Red and White cow would win supreme champion.

“I was pretty happy,” he said.

Ream said it is less intimidating to compete in the final competition now that he has a few under his belt.

“You get used to it,” he said.

Ream is the son of Mark and Stacey Ream.

David Wilson of Lancaster said both supreme champion cows were built to make a lot of milk.

“Those cows best fit the scorecard guidelines,” he said.

He further complimented the Brown Swiss.

“She was a 9-year-old cow that really done well for her age,” he said. “Just a solid cow.”

The junior show is for 4-H and FFA members only.
